Free expert advice to help increase mobility and independence

The 2019 Mobility Open Day at QEF Mobility Services was the most popular event yet!

Offering free information and advice as well as the latest products and assessments; the event was aimed at supporting people with disabilities or those who are recovering from an accident or illness, to increase their mobility and independence.

With a wide range of free mobility assessments for both children and adults, as well as the opportunity to ‘Get Going Live’ and experience driving an adapted car on our private track, this was a perfect opportunity for disabled people to experience driving, possibly for the first time.

Children’s disability charity MERU, part of the QEF group, bought along bespoke mobility and accessibility products, as well as adapting children’s toys for free, so they can be used with an accessible switch (sold separately).

The event was officially opened by Susan Rogers MBE, Manager for Mobility Centres in England at the Department for Transport. Motability Ambassador, Chris Edwards, was also available during the day to discuss recent changes to the scheme. The event was supported by a wide range of informed exhibitors showing the latest developments in mobility products for children and adults.

Michelle Giles, QEF Mobility Centre Manager said: “This event provides a unique experience for disabled people looking to increase their independence, especially those thinking about learning to drive. Our knowledgeable team provide support and guidance on driving an adapted car round our private track. We also have occupational therapists available to help with mobility challenges for both children and adults. Overall the day is really informative and very rewarding.”

Assessments available included:

- ‘Get Going Live’- driving an adapted car on a private track with a qualified instructor. Available to everyone aged 15+

- seating and transfer assessments so people can transfer into vehicles easily

- ‘Bugzi’ assessments - small powered wheelchairs for children under 5

- scooter and wheelchair assessments

- child car seat assessments

- Tryb4uFly assessments - giving people the support they need to travel by air

Sponsored by Adaptive Vehicle Hire, the day was a great success; with innovative equipment solutions, scooter testing on a bespoke track from TGA Mobility and great first-time driving experiences, all helping people to improve mobility and independence. There was some great feedback from visitors as well such as 'I never knew half of this existed!'

Thank you to everyone that took part in the day.
