DLA Mobility: sorting the facts from the fiction
Together with 38 other organisations, QEF has contributed to the report: DLA Mobility: sorting the facts from the fiction endorsed by ADASS. This a follow up to the Don’t Limit Mobility Report published in January.
A copy of the report with covering letter has been sent to key Ministers and MPs, as per the last report. There is a Westminister hall debate on this issue on 10 March, and it is expected that this report will be mentioned.
The report explains why the removal of the DLA/PIP mobility component from people living in state-funded residential care is inappropriate and damaging to their lives.
Proposed Mobility Cuts
The Welfare Reform Bill, announced on 17 February, includes proposals to stop paying the mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) to disabled people in residential care.
Following strong campaigning from disability organisations, the introduction of this change has been delayed to March 2013, pending an examination to see if there is there is an overlap with social care funding.
However the situation is far from clear. In 2013/2014 the Government plans to replace the DLA with the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) but as yet there is no indication if the Mobility Allowance will be included in the new benefit system.
Naturally QEF clients currently resident at QEF Independent Living Services have serious concerns. Hear how Wendy and Stephen feel about the proposed cuts and how it will affect them in this short video filmed by trainees at QEF Vocational Services.

Nothing to Laugh At
Come the event, come the competitor. The Virgin London Marathon has inspired thousands to dedicate time to training and running for a cause but initially nothing could have been further from Laura Townsend’s thoughts.
Three Marathons in Three Weeks

Two sisters from London have set themselves the ambitious challenge of running three marathons in just three weeks in April 2011. Rebecca and Sarah Martin, originally from Somerset but now living in London, are not new to running marathons and have previously run a total of seven between them. This year they wanted to push the boundaries further and complete not one, not two but three races in just three weeks. The first race takes place in Sussex on 3 April, followed by Suffolk on 10 April and finishing with the London Marathon on 17 April.
