Meaningful Approaches to Therapy

The following article ‘Let me tell you a story’, published in the July 2012 edition of ‘Bulletin’ (the official magazine of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists), demonstrates how intensive speech and language therapy sessions at QEF Neuro Rehabilitation Services have enabled therapists to employ innovative, meaningful projects to assist clients with cognitive communication difficulties following ABI.

Culture and Diversity Goes for Gold at NRS

World Day for Cultural Diversity is held annually on 21 May to help people learn about the importance of living in harmony with cultural diversity. To acknowledge this important concern, for the past few years NRS has been holding it’s own annual celebration of culture and diveristy for clients and staff at Banstead Place. This year we felt it was important to embrace the London 2012 Olympics in our cultural and diversity celebrations and held our annual event on 1 August in order to co-inside.

The day consisted of an art exhibition of clients work in the morning, followed by a sing-a-long session of varied and diverse songs performed by both clients and staff. There was a wide selection of different international food on offer at lunch and clients and staff were joined by members of the residents association of Park Road, and some of our work experiences providers.

The day’s events culminated with Banstead’s very own 2012 Olympics, which involved all clients and staff in events such as archery, egg and spoon races, shot put, and boccia. The highlight of the games has to be the 3 legged race. All clients were invited to join in, and clients of all abilities were supported to compete, with one brave occupational therapist tying himself to a wheelchair.  Each client received a gold medal at the end of the games for taking part in such a great day.
